Description

The building comprises former maltings and a warehouse, now used as district council offices. It was originally built in the late 18th century, but was largely rebuilt in 1861 and altered in 1989. The complex consists of two parallel blocks linked by a cross wing. The main block, facing Raymond Street, was a warehouse and manufactory, while the smaller block to the north-east operated as maltings. The construction uses flint facing to clunch and brick walls, with red and gault brick dressings. The roofs are covered in slate and artificial slate.

The main block has three storeys and seven bays, featuring late 20th-century two-light casement windows. A blocked loading bay door is situated between bays 5 and 6, with a coat of arms above it bearing an illegible date. Red brick bands delineate the floors. The north-west gable wall is rendered, while the south-east gable wall has a late 20th-century door and one two-light casement on each floor. The linking piece to the maltings is set back and features similar details, with a datestone indicating 1861. The maltings themselves are arranged on a T-shaped plan and incorporate boarded entrances, two-light casement windows without glass, and gabled roofs. A projecting bar to the north-west has a gabled roof and a raised malting kiln louvre.

The interior features bricked-in spaces that formerly connected the offices and maltings. The roofs are of late 20th-century construction, and the ground-floor entrance has breeze block partitions and an inserted staircase.
