Description

The Guildhall in Thetford is a building from 1901, designed by HJ Green. It is constructed of gault brick with stone dressings and has slate roofs, featuring an L-shaped plan with two storeys and a dormer attic. The south front of the bar of the L has five bays of Venetian windows on the first floor, separated by pilasters in a 1-3-1 arrangement. The building has rusticated quoins and a gabled roof, topped with a central polygonal cupola located east of a ridge stack. The stem of the L faces the Market Place and includes a convex projecting entrance porch with a round arch at the angle between the two wings. To the left of the entrance are round-headed sash windows, with the bays marked by engaged Tuscan columns. The stem features three large gables, each with Venetian windows, and a central polygonal cupola on a square plinth that includes a clock, all under gabled roofs.

Inside, the entrance leads to a hallway with a staircase at the end, which has a closed string, turned balusters, a ramped moulded handrail, and square newels. On either side of the hallway are courtrooms. The Large Court to the south has a four-centred barrel-vaulted ceiling, with an east wall that includes a niche under a swan-necked pediment, housing a Coade stone statue of Justice. The Small Court to the north retains its panelled bench. The main upper room features a groin-vaulted roof and is illuminated by Venetian windows on three sides, supported by king-post roof construction.
