Description
The Thetford War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921 and altered after the Second World War. It is located in Thetford Market Place at the center of the town and is made of Balmoral granite.
The memorial features a polished foliated cross atop an octagonal shaft, which has collar and ring decoration, and a moulded base made of unpolished granite. It stands on an octagonal plinth with a moulded foot, resting on a three-tiered base.
On the front of the plinth, the Seal of Thetford is carved along with the inscription: 1914 1918 / IN / EVER GRATEFUL / REMEMBRANCE / OF THE MEN OF / THIS BOROUGH / WHO / GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR / "LEST WE FORGET". The names of those who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the other sides of the plinth, while the names of those who lost their lives in the Second World War are inscribed on the rear of the plinth and base, below the dates 1939-1945.
