Description
The Raughton Head War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of Scottish granite and is located on a triangular green at a road junction in the center of Raughton Head, Cumbria, directly opposite the parish church.
The memorial features a tall Celtic cross made of Scottish granite, which has a central boss and intricate knot work carved on all sides. This cross is positioned atop a tall, four-sided pillar that has a moulded cornice and includes ball mouldings underneath, adorned with Celtic decorative motifs and inscriptions. The pillar stands on a two-stepped base.
The inscriptions on the pillar are in leaded lettering and read: "THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ KILLED IN ACTION/ (NAMES)/ 'THE GLORIOUS DEAD'// SERVED IN HM FORCES/ (NAMES)// SERVED IN HM FORCES/ (NAMES)// SERVED 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)/ IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE/ OF THOSE FROM THIS/ PARISH/ WHO ANSWERED THEIR COUNTRY’S CALL/ (NAMES)."
