Description

Number 6 Market Place and Number 1A Castle Street are two shops dating from the mid-16th century. They are timber-framed, plastered, and colourwashed, with a pantile roof. The building has two storeys, with the upper storey jettied. The front features a six-panelled door flanked on both sides by a late 19th-century canted bay window with false leading. To the right, there is a second similar late 19th-century shop front with a side entrance. The first floor has three late 20th-century windows and a three-light casement window to the right, which includes glazing bars. The roof is gabled, with a ridge stack located left of centre.

Inside, there is a winder staircase at the rear of the stack, which has a brick fireplace with chamfered jambs on the west side. The building features chamfered bridging beams with tongue and bar stops. The first-floor fireplace is four-centred and also has chamfered brick jambs. The roof was originally of the clasped purlin type from the 16th century, with some fragments still identifiable, although it has been mainly rebuilt at various times.
