Description

No. 13 Castle Street is a building that now houses shops. It dates from the 16th century but was largely rebuilt in the early 18th century and extended and altered in the 19th century. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, featuring old tiled roofs with a moulded eaves cornice at the front and unequal gabled outshuts at the rear.

On the exterior, the first floor has two flush-set 12-pane sash windows with architrave surrounds, and the plastered front is divided into large raised panels. The first floor jetties out over the ground floor, which has 19th-century shopfronts below, complete with fascias on a bressumer. The ground floor features closed plate glass display windows and half-glazed doors with bolection-surrounded lower panels and slim fanlights. The door to No. 25 Parliament Square has a slim pilaster surround with incised grooves. The roof includes two dormers with margin-glazed windows and hipped roofs.

Inside, the timber framing is exposed in both shops. In No. 13 Castle Street, downward curved bracing indicates the building's 16th-century origins, which includes a lower two-bay outshut with a pegged rafter roof. No. 25 Parliament Square features a central chamfered beam with a tongue stop above the ground floor, a steep winder stair alongside the fireplace and party wall, a wide boarded cambered first floor, and a corner fireplace.
