Description
23 Parliament Square is a house that has been converted into a shop. The front dates from the 19th century, while the main structure is from the late 16th or early 17th century, with some 19th-century alterations. The building features timber framing in the party wall, with stuccoed brick and a rendered side. It has a monopitch roof covered with 20th-century clay tiles, which are concealed by a parapet that has a moulded stucco cornice and 20th-century brick on edge.
The exterior is a three-storey, single-bay structure that fits between larger buildings. The first floor features a canted timber oriel bay with a triple sash window consisting of 2:6:2 panes, topped with a hipped lead roll roof. The second floor has a single recessed 6-pane sash window set beneath a segmental arch. The ground floor showcases a 19th-century shopfront with a closed plate glass window, a half-glazed door with twin bolection-surrounded lower panels, and a pilaster surround with moulded consoles and coupled brackets.
Inside, substantial timber studwork is visible in both party walls, and there are winder stairs at the rear. The basement has been cement-floored and plastered, while 17th-century studwork can be seen on the first floor. The roof is not accessible.
