Description
Nos. 1 and 3 Parliament Square is an emporium, now used as shops with offices above, built around 1870. The building features a yellow brick front that has been colourwashed, topped with a Welsh slated roof and a brick dentil cornice with a moulded band. There are square blocking pieces above the pilasters on the facade, each adorned with terracotta urn finials.
The exterior consists of three storeys and a four-bay facade, with an additional bay on the left above the carriageway. The second floor has four tall 8-pane sash windows, set on stuccoed sills and recessed under rubbed brick flat arches. There are pilasters on the left and right, with a similar window in the left bay. The first floor features a full-width showroom window with six bays, subdivided into two and three lights by moulded glazing bars, and is topped with flat bell caps, intermediate mullions, and transoms. The pilasters here have Corinthian caps and foliated reeded consoles, with a fascia that includes a moulded band and a bold moulded cornice above. The left-hand bay at the second-floor level has a single recessed 8-pane sash window. The ground floor has plain pilasters with stucco blocks at the first-floor level, roll and projecting plinth bases, and two full-width 20th-century timber shopfronts with plate glass windows; there is a carriageway to the rear at the far left.
The interior has not been inspected. This building forms a significant street frontage group with Nos. 5 and 7 Parliament Square.
