Description

Nos. 111-119 Duke Street are various commercial premises and offices built around 1870. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar sandstone dressings and features slate roofs. It has two storeys and an attic, with six broad bays facing Duke Street, an angled corner bay to the left, and a four-bay return to Parade Street. The upper floors have plain sash windows throughout.

For Nos. 111-115, the shop fronts are likely from the early 20th century. The shop front at No. 115 includes pilasters and an eight-panel door to the right of three arched lights with ventilators in the spandrels. The other shop windows are plainer, set under a continuous fascia and cornice. No. 111 has a corner doorway with a tall overlight. The first floor features a sill band and an impost string course, with windows consisting of three round-headed lights beneath scalloped ashlar arches with hoodmoulds. There is a single window in the corner bay, and a nosed string course with a corbel table supports a cast-iron gutter that runs across the facade as a cornice.

The attic storey has paired half-dormers with pilasters and shells under corbelled, round-arched hoods, and a string course beneath the ashlar gutter leading to a mansard roof. Nos. 117 and 119 have altered ground floors, but the upper floor of No. 117 matches the details of Nos. 111-115. The upper floors of No. 119 have similar features, with two two-light windows on the first floor and three dormers in the attic. The roof is hipped over the left corner and has brick stacks on the front slope over the party walls, with the two stacks on the right being truncated.

On the left return, the shop front continues for one bay, and to the left of this is a door flanked by windows, all featuring rubbed-brick segmental arches with hood-moulds. The first floor has two-light windows in bays three and four, a single-light window in bay one, and a narrow two-light window in bay two, all with rubbed-brick arches. There are single dormers matching the front.
