Description
The Statue of Sir James Ramsden, located in Barrow in Furness, was erected in 1872. It was sculpted by M Noble of London, with stonework by MacDonald Field and Co of Aberdeen and London. The statue is made of bronze and stands on a granite pedestal and limestone stylobate. The pedestal has a stepped base and is inscribed with: 'IN HONOR/ OF/ SIR JAMES RAMSDEN/ FIRST MAYOR OF THIS BOROUGH/ ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION/ 1872'. On the left side of the pedestal, there is a bas-relief depicting rural Barrow in 1846, while the right side shows an industrial scene from 1871. The statue features a dentilled cornice and faces north along Abbey Road. Sir James Ramsden is depicted in mayoral robes and chain, holding a chart of Barrow Port. The statue was unveiled in 1872 by the Duke of Devonshire and cost £1,500, with the granite costing an additional £500. Ramsden played a significant role in the development of the town after the arrival of the railway in 1846 and co-founded the Barrow Shipbuilding Company Limited. The statue serves as the centerpiece of Ramsden Square.
