Description
The presbytery to the Church of St Mary of Furness, along with a connecting wall, was built in the late 19th century by J Byrne of Liverpool. It is constructed from snecked red sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The building has a U-shaped plan and is two storeys high, with an asymmetrical, three-bay entrance front facing Duke Street, a five-bay right return, and a longer wing at the rear that connects to the church.
The entrance front includes a chamfered plinth and a rounded corner on the right, which is corbelled at the first floor. To the left of the centre, there is a quoined doorway featuring a double-chamfered pointed arch and a recessed door with a Gothic overlight. The windows in bays one and three have rounded sills and chamfered ashlar surrounds, with later casements. The window in bay three is positioned beneath a corbelled arch that supports a projecting stack, while the window in bay one is located below a canted oriel bay window with one large light flanked by two smaller lights. A rounded sill band at the first floor leads to a narrow sash window above the door, and there are stone gutter blocks.
Bay three features a gabled roof with gablet kneelers and ashlar copings, and its stack has a bricked-up slit, offsets, and a string course. The left end gable has a projecting stack and similar details. The right return has relieving arches over five ground-floor windows like those at the front, and a rounded sill band at the first floor leads to four two-light windows and two one-light windows, all with plain sashes. The right end gable mirrors the others and there are two ridge stacks. The front wall of the presbytery extends to the left as a screen wall, which steps down over a square-headed doorway and connects to the Church of St Mary of Furness.
