Description
No. 125 Duke Street is a bank building, now used as offices, located facing Ramsden Square in Barrow in Furness. It was constructed around 1873 for the Cumberland Union Bank Company. The building features ashlar sandstone on a limestone plinth and has a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall with an attic and consists of four bays.
The ground floor has a moulded plinth and a channel-rusticated finish. The entrance, located in the first bay, includes panelled double doors beneath an ashlar transom inscribed with the word "BANK." Above the doors is an overlight and an archivolt with a carved keystone, flanked by fluted pilasters adorned with bayleaf swags. The entrance is supported by winged-lion brackets that lead to a modillioned cornice, which is topped by a balustraded balcony featuring panelled corner dies and fluted ball finials. The other bays have a limestone sill band above recessed round-arched sashes, each with carved keystones and a modillioned cornice.
On the first floor, there is a balcony door along with plain sashes that have a moulded sill band. These windows are framed by Ionic aedicules with plain friezes and dentilled cornices. A continuous dentilled cornice projects over each bay, forming the sills for the windows above. The second floor features sashes flanked by fluted pilasters beneath an entablature, with groups of three corbels marking the bay divisions. The ashlar parapet is interrupted by square-headed dormers that have cornices on brackets and raised segmental pediments. The building has a mansard roof with ornate end stacks that include offsets, panelled sides, string courses, and cornices on corbel tables.
Inside, the banking hall is finished with oak dado panelling and features nine-panel doors. The ceiling is divided into three panels decorated with Greek key, rosette, and guilloche ornamentation. The main staircase, located at the rear left, has turned balusters and a wreathed handrail. This building is part of a planned scheme around Ramsden Square, which serves as the focal point of Barrow in Furness town centre.
