Description
77 and 79 Duke Street are shops with flats above, built around 1865 and later altered. The buildings are constructed of red brick, with No. 77 being painted, and feature slate roofs. They rise three storeys and have a two-to-one bay arrangement facing Duke Street, with a corner bay leading into six bays on the right side along St Vincent Street.
No. 77 has an early 20th-century shop front that includes a recessed part-glazed door with an overlight, flanked by plate-glass windows beneath a fascia. No. 79 features a later shop front with a recessed corner entrance. On the first floor, there is a sill band with shouldered and eared architraves, segmentally-arched heads, and raised keystones; No. 77 has four-pane sash windows, while No. 79 has an altered four-pane sash. The second floor also has a sill band on shaped blocks, with four-pane sashes in recessed, square-headed openings. The buildings have an eaves cornice and feature a part-rendered brick stack on the left and another on the party wall. The corner bay and right return mirror the front, with four-pane sashes on both the first and second floors.
