Hotel. c1875. By Thomas Bennett. For TC and J Hunter (plan). Red brick with ashlar sandstone dressings, slate roof. 4 storeys with attic, 11 bays with windows in rhythm 3:1:2:2:2:1. Chamfered plinth. 4-pane sashes on continuous sill bands. Main entrance to bay 4 has panelled double doors in raised ashlar surround with pilasters, columns and round arch with carved spandrels bearing initials 'TC' and 'JH'; cornice on consoles surmounted by balustraded balcony. Ground-floor windows have sill blocks and gauged-brick, round arches under linked, pointed-arched hoodmoulds. Doorway formed through bay 2 window; square-headed vehicle entrance to bay 11. 1st floor: moulded brick, round arches to each window; round-arched, continuous hoodmould. 2nd floor: shouldered lintels beneath segmental brick arches and segmentally-arched, continuous hoodmould. 3rd floor windows have segmental-arched lintels and straight cornices. String course and corbel table to eaves cornice with blocking course. Front-slope stack between bays 6 and 7 has offset plinth, band and cornice; 2 similar stacks on right now truncated. Brick dormer added over bays 1-4. Plans submitted in 1874 for a 'New Hotel' by 'Thomas Bennet, Architect, Cornwallis Street'. The drawings clearly relate to this hotel although the window treatment must have been revised. (Building Plans Register: 1875-: NO.589).
