Description
The Statue of Henry Schneider, located on Duke Street in Barrow-in-Furness, was erected in 1891 and sculpted by Percy Wood. It is made of bronze and stands on a granite pedestal with a two-step stylobate. The cylindrical pedestal is inscribed with the words: 'IN HONOR/ OF HENRY WILLIAM SCHNEIDER/ MAYOR OF THIS BOROUGH/ 1875 TO 1878/ ERECTED/ BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION/ 1891', and features a Vitruvian scroll beneath the cornice. The statue depicts a robed figure of Henry Schneider, who is oriented towards Duke Street. Schneider, along with Hannay and Co, built the first blast furnaces in Barrow between 1857 and 1859, and later merged with James Ramsden's company to create the Barrow Haematite Iron and Steel Company in 1866. By 1876, this company had become the largest iron and steel plant in the world, utilizing the Bessemer process. The statue serves as the centerpiece of Schneider Square.
