Description

St Magnus Bay Hotel, located in Hillswick, was built around 1900. This two-storey and attic hotel features an H-plan design and has six bays. The walls are timber framed and clad in clapboard, resting on concrete foundations.

The south elevation is asymmetrical with a two-bay center. It has a timber entrance porch with panelled and glazed double doors in a canted bay to the left, and multi-pane windows to the right under a canted timber canopy with a cast-iron and timber balustrade. On the first floor, there is a window in the left bay and a bipartite window in the right bay. Flanking the center are two gabled sections; the left gable has bipartite windows, while the right gable features a piend-roofed canted timber bay with a centered bipartite window and flanking windows.

The west elevation is also asymmetrical with three bays, arranged in a 2-1 grouping. It includes bipartite windows at both the ground and first floors in the outer left bay, regular fenestration in the center bay offset to the left, and a two-storey, four-light canted timber window in the outer right bay.

The north elevation is asymmetrical, with two gabled sections advanced at the outer right and left. The left gable has a single window on the first floor in the right bay. The right gable features a lean-to addition at the ground level, a single window on the first floor in the left bay, and a brick stack at the center of the gable. The center bays are irregularly fenestrated and include a stair window.

The east elevation is mostly obscured by modern alterations and has a single-storey gabled wing projecting to the east with a variety of modern openings.

The hotel has four-pane timber sash and case windows, a purple-grey slate roof with red ridge tiles, and overhanging timber eaves with decorative timber barge boards on the gables. There are piend-roofed canted timber dormers with four-pane timber sash and case windows and plate glass sidelights over the center bays of the south elevation and each bay of the side elevations. The chimney stacks are made of yellow brick with concrete copes and tapering red cans.

Inside, the hotel features varnished vertically-boarded pine lining with matching cornices and architraves on the walls and ceilings of the hall, dining room, and some bedrooms. The staircase matches this style, with turned spindles and ball-finialled newels.
