Description

The Northmavine Parish Manse and steading, located in Hillswick, was built in 1768, with alterations made in 1790 and 1821. The manse is laid out in a symmetrical T-plan. The main two-storey, three-bay range runs east to west, with a two-storey wing projecting northwards from the centre, and single-storey, single-bay wings projecting from the east and west gables. A principal entrance door is located in the northeast re-entrant angle. The walls are harled.

The south elevation is near-symmetrical. There is a blank section at ground floor level in the central bay, with a stair window offset to the left at first floor level. Regular windows are positioned at ground and first floors in the flanking bays. An E wing features a window and a vertically-boarded timber door.

The east (entrance) elevation shows the gables of the main range and the east wing to the left, with the two-bay elevation of the north wing recessed on the right. A vertically-boarded timber door with a rectangular multi-pane timber fanlight sits above it at ground floor level in the bay to the left. Regular fenestration is present in the bay to the right and at first floor level.

The north elevation is near-symmetrical, with the north gable of the north wing projecting at the centre. Windows are centred at ground, first floor, and in the gablehead. The north elevation of the main range flanks the north wing, with a modern window at ground level to the left, and narrow windows flanking in the re-entrant angles at first floor. A single window is present on the wing to the left.

The west elevation mirrors the east elevation. The west elevation of the north wing (recessed to the left) is irregularly fenestrated, featuring a shouldered three-flue wallhead stack at the centre.

The windows are four- and 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with a border-glazed stair window. The roof is grey slate with skew copes. Harled apex stacks, coped with circular cans, rise from the principal range and wing gables.

A random rubble wall encloses a rectangular garden centred on the south elevation. The north wall, adjacent to the house, has two openings flanking the centre and extends west, curving north to an entrance gate. A gateway is located in the east wall, to the north of the outbuildings.

The outbuildings are arranged in an L-plan, constructed from gabled random rubble with a mono-pitch store between at the angle. The rear (west) elevation of the west building continues the garden wall, while the east elevation of the east building has a single vertically-boarded timber door centred. The three-bay north elevation of the east building contains vertically-boarded timber doors to the centre and right bays, and a two-leaf vertically-boarded timber door in the right bay. The two-bay east gable has infilled windows. The roofs are purple-grey slate with stugged sandstone ashlar skew copes.
