Description
The Neap Old Manse, dating from 1770, is a group of former manse buildings arranged around a courtyard. The main block is a two-story, three-bay rectangular structure facing south. Attached to the rear of this block is a later two-story wing with three-bay side elevations projecting to the north. A single-story, three-bay stable range extends continuously from the north wing, and a single-story, five-bay range forms a right angle, bounding the north side of the courtyard.
The principal block has harled walls with droved sandstone ashlar margins. The north wing and later outbuildings feature harl-pointed granite rubble walls with stugged sandstone dressings. The south elevation is symmetrical, retaining the remains of a later harled rubble double-doored porch fronting the central entrance door at ground level. The flanking bays and the first floor have regular fenestration. The east gable has a ground-floor window in the bay to the left. The north (rear) elevation features a tall stair window in the centre and a single window at first floor in the bay to the right. The west gable has a wide chimney breast advanced at the centre with a first-floor window to the left.
The north wing's east elevation includes the remains of a formerly piend-roofed rear porch in the re-entrant angle, with access to a doorway. A single window is located at first floor, offset to the right. The west elevation is asymmetrical with three bays, each containing a window. The centre window is offset to the right, and the right bay is slightly advanced.
The stable has an east-facing elevation with offset bays, an infilled window at the centre, and vertically-boarded timber doors in the flanking bays. A door is present only on the outer left of the west elevation.
The steading consists of two gabled buildings aligned and connected by a continuous north elevation. A timber lintel with iron hinge-pins sits above the central opening of the north elevation, which is asymmetrical. The south elevation is flanked by two-bay elevations. The east range has a blank left bay and a vertically-boarded timber door in the right bay. The west range has a doorway in the right bay and a low timber-infilled opening to the left. A loading door is located in the east gablehead of the west range, with a roofless lean-to adjoining the east gable. The north elevation of the steading has windows to the outer right and left; the latter has four-pane glazing to the upper section and timber shutters to the lower.
Purple-grey slate roofs cover the north wing and stable, the latter being piended at the north end. Surviving purple-grey slates are present on the east range of the steading. Random rubble boundary walls with square gatepiers topped with pyramidal caps enclose a paddock to the west of the house and stable, and a yard to the north of the steading.
