Description
The Carpenter's Shed is a small structure located at South West Dock in Symbister Harbour, Whalsay, dating from the mid-19th century. It is part of a group of three stores situated to the southwest, which includes the New Hoose to the north, built around 1900, and the Fish House in the center.
The harbour features piers that extend east and north from the shore, with a retaining wall along the southwest side. The sides of the piers are constructed from roughly-coursed rubble, and the carriageways are partially cobbled. There are stone slab steps located at the midpoint of the south side of the northern pier, which has a semicircular eastern end with an additional flight of steps. The western side of the southern pier also has stone slab steps and edging stones, with a semicircular northern end that shows remnants of iron cramps and cannon bollards.
The New Hoose is a tall gabled building made of harl-pointed rubble walls with stugged sandstone dressings. It features 16-pane fixed lights on the outer right side of its elevations, a single-storey lean-to on the west gable, and modern timber infill in a tall round-headed arch at the east gable. The roof is made of corrugated iron.
The Fish House has harl-pointed rubble walls and small square windows on the outer left and right sides of its northern elevation. The east gable has a semicircular arch that is infilled with cement render, and it is topped with modern corrugated sheet roofing.
The Carpenter's Shed also features harl-pointed rubble walls and has a deep-set vertically-boarded timber door with a brick-infilled window centered above it on the east gable. The roof is made of blue-grey slate and includes cast-iron skylights.
