Description

Harbour View in Symbister, Whalsay, is a building that possibly dates back to 1563, with significant rebuilding in the 18th century and alterations in the 19th century. It is a single-storey structure with a laigh floor, featuring five bays in an asymmetrical layout that once served as a trading booth and house. The walls are harled with painted margins around the doors and windows, and the windows have projecting cills.

On the east elevation facing the harbour, the design is asymmetrical with small windows at the laigh floor located in the centre and outer bays. There are vertically-boarded timber doors offset to the left in the bays flanking the centre. The principal floor has regular fenestration in the centre and outer bays, with a square window in the bay to the left of centre and a blank bay to the right of centre.

The south gable features a single window to the right at the principal floor. The west elevation, which is the rear, has its laigh floor concealed and includes a small window to the left of centre at the principal floor, along with a gabled entrance porch and a lean-to addition to the right of centre.

The north gable has a single-storey cement-rendered mono-pitch addition at an intermediate level. The building has modern glazing throughout and is topped with a purple-grey slate roof that has concrete skew copes. The gablehead stacks are harled and coped, with circular cans on the north stack.

Surrounding the property, there are random rubble walls enclosing a garden that extends around the dock to the northeast. A single-storey rubble mono-pitch outbuilding is attached to the north wall. Additionally, there is a retaining wall aligned with the east elevation, which adjoins a modern harled and coped wall along the road to the south, marking the boundary of the triangular east garden.
