Description

The Pierfront Buildings in Uyeasound, Unst, date back to the early 19th century and form a row facing the harbour. The main elevation to the southeast features a single-storey and attic, three-bay house, flanked on the left (southwest) by a single-storey and loft former trading booth, and on the right (northeast) by a single-storey, five-bay shop, which is arranged in a 4-1 grouping. There is also a timber addition that runs parallel to the rear. The buildings are constructed with random rubble walls and have stugged and droved sandstone ashlar dressings.

The house has a symmetrical design, with the former entrance door infilled to cill level in the centre bay. The left bay has modern glazing at ground level, while the right bay features 4-pane timber sash and case glazing.

The booth is also symmetrical, with a vertically-boarded timber door at ground level in the centre bay, flanked by 4-pane timber fixed-lights. There is a single loft window in the southwest gable, and a large timber and corrugated-iron lean-to addition at the rear.

The shop has an asymmetrical layout, with shop windows grouped to the left. This includes a 2-pane timber fixed-light in the penultimate and outer left bays, and a 4-panel outer door with a 2-leaf glazed and panelled inner door leading to the shop entrance in the right bay, which also has a 4-pane fixed-light shop window. There is a modern door with a small narrow window adjacent to the right in the outer right bay. A gabled timber addition is slightly recessed to the right of the northeast gable.

The roofing materials include purple-grey slates on the house and the east pitch of the booth, which also has cast-iron skylights. The west pitch of the booth is covered with stone slab slates, while the shop and timber addition have grey tiles and corrugated iron, respectively. The house features stone-coped, harl-pointed rubble gablehead stacks with circular cans, as do the north gables of the booth and shop. The south gable of the booth has rubble skew-copes, while concrete skew-copes are found elsewhere.
