Description
Norse Mill in Westing, Unst, is a later 19th-century horizontal mill built in the traditional rectangular gabled style using drystone rubble. It features upper and lower houses with square openings for the inlet and outlet, which are offset to the north of the centerline of the east and west elevations, respectively. The south gable has a vertically-boarded timber entrance door that is centered, while the north gablehead includes a centrally placed 2-pane timber fixed-light window. The timber roof structure is currently (as of 1997) covered with corrugated sheeting and topped with turf.
Inside, there is a timber shute within the inlet that feeds into the tirl in the lower house. The upper house contains a millstone that remains in-situ, with a horizontally-boarded timber hopper suspended above it.
