Description
No. 18 Fore Street is a mid-19th century house with a ground floor shop, featuring some 20th-century alterations. The front is made of stucco over brickwork, with brown stock brick laid in Flemish bond and stucco dressings. The roof is covered with Welsh slates.
The exterior has three storeys with a two-bay facade facing Fore Street and seven bays on the Bell Lane side, divided by pilasters into sections of one, three, and three bays. The first floor has two recessed 12-pane sash windows, each with frieze and cornice heads supported by consoles. The second floor features two recessed 6-pane sash windows, with a plain frieze and a moulded cornice above.
On the Bell Lane side, the first floor includes stucco pilasters with caps that match the band and frieze cornice. There are seven first-floor windows, recessed in brick reveals with stucco heads similar to those on the Fore Street elevation, and stucco sills. The second floor has seven windows under rubbed brick flat arches, with brick reveals and stucco sills.
A plat band at the first-floor level is covered by a shop fascia on the right-hand three bays facing Bell Lane, which provides access to the Fore Street frontage. The early 20th-century shopfront features a corner entrance, recessed behind supporting Tuscan Doric columns on tall plinths. The arcaded timber windows are styled similarly to those on No. 16. Above the shopfront is a canted fascia with dentils and a moulded cornice.
To the left of the shopfront on the Bell Lane ground floor are two recessed 12-pane sashes and a central arched window under a rubbed brick flat arch that leads to a rear yard. The rear elevation is timber-framed and stuccoed over brick, with part of the ground floor constructed from 20th-century Fletton bricks. The interior has not been inspected.
