Description

23 and 25 Railway Street is a house that has been converted into a ground floor shop. It dates from the 17th century and has been altered in the 19th century, with further changes made in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed and stuccoed, with a ground floor that is underbuilt in colourwashed brick, and a rear offshoot that is pebbledashed. It has old tiled roofs and originally had two bays, later extended to the east by a third bay.

The exterior features two storeys and attics. On the first floor, there are three flush-set 19th-century sash windows with divided glazing, surrounded by moulded architraves and topped with ornamental stucco heads. The left flank elevation has a flush-set sash window divided into six tall panes and a small six-pane sash window with a stucco surround. The ground floor has a full-width mid-20th-century shopfront with plate glass windows and a splayed corner, beneath an overhang with a continuous fascia along the main and left flank elevations, including blind boxes above. There is a 20th-century flush door with a glazed upper panel and a stucco surround at the left of the outshoot.

The roof is a hipped gambrel over the main block, featuring a low parapet with a moulded stucco band and cornice. There are two box casement dormers on the front slope, a low pitch over the right extension, and a double-gabled roof over the rear outshoot. At the rear, there are two red brick chimneystacks with orange clay pots.

The interior has been extensively remodelled and opened up on the ground floor since the 1920s, and there are no notable features visible now.
