Description
The Tipsy Toad Wine Bar, originally a mechanics' institute and later a public library, was built in 1887. It features gault brick construction under a slate roof and is a single-storey building with five bays facing the Market Place. Each bay is separated by Tuscan pilasters or columns made of rendered brick. The central bay contains half-glazed double-leaf doors set beneath a round arch, with two round-headed 20th-century plate-glass windows on either side. The building has a rendered entablature and a parapet, topped by a tall central gable that has a recessed panel with a cartouche, flanked by niches on either side. The roofs are gabled. To the right, there is a two-bay link connecting to the Guildhall, which features a round-headed sash window with 6/6 glazing bars and a round-headed doorway. The interior has not been inspected.
