Description

No. 72 St Helens Road is a house that was used as a hotel when it was surveyed, built around 1840. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and has a Welsh slate roof. The building is two storeys high with attics and features three sets of two bays, along with a two-storey L-shaped wing at the rear right corner and a kitchen wing at the angle with the main range.

The front has a plinth and an open-fronted central porch that includes a corniced transom and overlight set in a keyed archivolt, along with a wide panelled door. The outer bays are illuminated by large sash windows with glazing bars, framed by architraves that rise from blocks on the plinth. On the first floor, there is a band and a moulded sill band, with a central rounded-headed sash window featuring consoles beneath a keyed archivolt, while the outer windows are smaller versions of those below.

A nosed string course and brackets on consoles support the corniced eaves overhang, and the roof is hipped with corniced stacks on the side ridges. The right wing is set back and has a basket-arched carriage entrance with a keystone, along with a sill band supporting a 16-pane sash window and a hipped roof. The rear of the building includes a round-headed sash window for the stair and attic windows located below the eaves.

On the left side, there is an inserted French window on the left, while the rest of the windows are sashes with glazing bars under wedge lintels. The right side features a blind bay for the first bay and an unequally hung 16-pane sash window in the ground floor of the second bay. Inside, there is a central hall with a contemporary staircase that has a cast-iron balustrade, and a pilastered marble fireplace is located in the front-left room.
