Description
Christ Church is a church built between 1850 and 1854 by E. H. Shellard. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a slate roof. The building includes a nave, clerestory, aisles, chancel, and a west tower, all designed in the Gothic Revival style with Perpendicular elements. The church has a 6-bay nave and aisles, along with a 2-bay chancel that has a projecting plinth and weathered buttresses. The aisle windows are 3-light, while the clerestory and chancel windows are 2-light. There is a porch located in the first bay and a prominent 5-light east window. The gables are adorned with raked parapets and cross finials. The west tower is castellated and consists of three stages, featuring weathered diagonal buttresses and crocketed corner pinnacles. The west door is set beneath a crocketed ogee hoodmould, and there are two 2-light belfry openings with similar hoods, along with a 3-light transomed west window.
Inside, the church has a double-chamfered nave arcade supported by octagonal columns with moulded capitals. The roof features arch-braced collar-tie trusses. There is a west gallery with an arcaded parapet, which has been partitioned off below in the 20th century. The interior includes timber fittings and stained glass.
