Description

The former canal warehouse is a Grade II listed building located on Leigh Canal Street. It is a late 18th-century stone-built warehouse with a late 19th-century brick addition. The structure features graduated stone slate and slate roofs. The original warehouse has four bays and two storeys, while the later addition has five bays and three storeys.

The 18th-century section includes loading doors on each floor in the third bay, which are topped with segmental arches, although one has been replaced by a steel joist. The second and third bays have three-light flat-faced stone mullion windows on both floors at the front and rear, and the first bay features a canted two-storey bay window. There is a ridge chimney stack on this part of the building.

The 19th-century warehouse is significantly deeper and taller, with four 16-pane casement windows on each floor, also with segmental brick arches. It has central loading doors adorned with blue brick dressings and a gable above the eaves. The eaves are detailed with dentilled brickwork, and the gables are coped. The rear elevation is similar but includes a large projecting canopy over the loading doors. This building showcases an interesting contrast between 18th-century and 19th-century industrial architecture.
