Description
A canal warehouse, built around 1819, with alterations in the mid-20th century and restored in 1994. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and a slate roof. It features a plinth, quoins to the ground floor, a first-floor band, and coped, pedimented gables. The four-storey warehouse, plus attics, has eleven bays by seven windows and a slightly projecting central section of seven windows topped by a pediment. The symmetrical canal-facing elevation has regular glazing bar sashes, which have been mostly reglazed. A full-height round-headed recess extends through the upper floors, with loft doors on each level. Above this recess is a half-round window. The ground floor features a segmental arched, rusticated opening intended for boats, flanked by round-headed, rusticated openings, now blocked. Further windows are located on either side. The rear elevation, facing the wharf, has similar window arrangements, the right side being largely covered by a two-storey addition from the mid-19th century. The symmetrical south gable has tall, elliptical arched recesses in the central, second, and sixth bays; the central recess is taller. Each loft door is present on each floor of the outer bays and on the top floor of the central bay. The ground floor of the gable features a central, rusticated, elliptical arched cart opening, flanked by smaller, blocked elliptical arched openings. The interior has not been inspected. This warehouse is a good example of a specialized canal building.
