Description
The Arches and linked tunnel entrance on Furnival Road in Sheffield is a Grade II listed structure dating from 1855, with restoration completed in 1983. It was built for the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company and features rock-faced stone and rubble with ashlar dressings. The design includes a string course and coped parapets, along with a continuous retaining wall.
At the west end, there is a segmental skew arch. On the Furnival Road side, the structure has flanking pilasters and sloping wing walls with smaller piers, all topped with pyramidal caps. To the east, the wall projects forward with nine segmental arches, which then continues in a gentle S-curve with an additional eleven arches. Two further arches were demolished in 1993. The tenth arch is narrower and also features flanking pilasters with pyramidal caps. All arches include keystones. The vaults beneath the arches are supported by girders that carry rail tracks, where coal was dropped from wagons into the vaults below. The building was vacant at the time of the survey.
