Description
The Sheaf Works, located at 1 North Quay Drive in Sheffield, is a disused cutlery works built in 1823. This building is constructed of ashlar and features a hipped slate roof with two large ridge stacks, showcasing a Classical Revival style. It has a plinth, a first-floor band, a sill band, moulded eaves, and a pediment with a coped parapet. The structure stands three storeys high and has a nine-window range. The projecting centre has five windows and includes a pediment with a tablet inscribed "Sheaf Works." The windows are primarily twelve-pane sashes, although the pair on the right has been replaced by plain sashes, all featuring moulded surrounds and cornices. Above these, there are nine six-pane sashes, two of which have been replaced by two-light casements. The ground floor has twelve-pane sashes with eared architraves and cornices.
On the right return, there are three windows with a projecting centre, which includes a single twelve-pane sash flanked by tripartite sashes with scrolled pediments. Above this, three six-pane sashes with cornices are present. Below, there is a doorcase with double columns, a cornice, and a fanlight, flanked by single tripartite sashes with scrolled pediments. The rear of the building features regular fenestration, a clock in the pediment, and three elliptical arched basement openings with keystones, which are now blocked. This building is noted to be the first designed for the factory production of cutlery.
