Description
The George and Dragon is a public house located on King Street, dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of painted brick and features a Welsh slate roof. It has a two-storey, twin-gabled front with two windows on the first floor. The deep plan includes a short side wing off the left return. The doorway, positioned to the right of centre, has a corniced wooden doorcase and is flanked by broad four-pane sash windows with projecting sills and wedge lintels. The first floor displays applied herringbone boarding and transomed three-light casements. The bargeboards are adorned with turned finials. A brick stack is located to the left of the central valley, and there is a lantern on the right-hand ridge.
At the rear, the left gable features a fragment of a brick hoodmould. The left return includes a gabled wing lit by an early three-light casement under a brick hoodmould, with remains of a hoodmould visible on the ground floor to the right. Both returns show a ragged joint near the King Street facade, indicating that the building has been refaced. Inside, there are some contemporary ceiling beams in the bar area, while the rest of the interior likely conceals extensive 17th-century fabric. This building is one of the few identifiable 17th-century urban structures in the area.
