Description
The Boar's Head Public House is a public house that was rebuilt in 1900, as noted on a decorative cartouche. It is constructed of red brick with terracotta dressings and has a green slate roof. The building features four by five bays and stands two storeys tall in an eclectic Baroque style.
The façade includes a projecting plinth, with bands separating the first and second floors, supported by Ionic columns and topped with a coped parapet. The ground floor has semi-circular-arched windows with keystones, archivolts, and casements featuring etched glass. There are panelled doors in the third bay, which are adorned with a fanlight, columns, and flat pilasters that enclose arabesque-enriched spandrel panels.
On the first floor, canted and bow oriel windows are highlighted by terracotta mullions and transoms. The left corner of the building is accentuated by an octagonal lead-covered cupola on columns and scrolls, balanced by a gable on the right that features ball finials and a keyed oculus. The side elevations are similarly treated. The Church Street elevation showcases a boar's head peering through an arabesque surround within the central gable. The building is topped with tall clustered chimney stacks.
Originally, the Boar's Head housed the brewery head offices. The interior remains remarkably complete, retaining many original features including a staircase with turned balusters and a pulvinated frieze on a closed string, original timber and cast-iron fireplaces, Art Nouveau tiles, plaster cornices, and original bar fittings.
