Description
The war memorial, located near the junction with Silk Street in Leigh, was built in 1922 by J C Prestwich. It is made of ashlar Portland limestone and features a cenotaph set on a stepped base in the center of a memorial garden. The memorial is designed in a classical style, with a plinth that has re-entrant corners. On two sides, bronze plaques are set in architraves beneath wreaths and are flanked by engaged columns with fluted shafts and palm-leaf capitals. Above these is a dentilled cornice over friezes inscribed with the words 'OUR GLORIOUS DEAD'. At the top of the memorial is a stylised coffin adorned with crosses and a wreath. The sides display sculptured swords placed between bronze pikes, and the frieze is inscribed with the dates of both World Wars.
