Description

60 and 61 East Street is a house with a shop, dating from the early 17th century, with a rear wing added in the late 17th century. The property was divided into two separate units, likely in the 18th century. It features a rendered and colourwashed timber frame with brick infill and has plaintile roofs.

The building is two storeys high and has a three-window range. On the ground floor, there are two plank doors to the right, separated by a 6/6 horned sash window and a 4-paned fixed window. The left part has a 19th-century brick underbuilt jetty, which is pierced by a 4-panelled door and a plate-glass shop display window. The jetty is exposed on the east side and supported by two curved brackets.

The first floor windows, from left to right, include one 6/6 unhorned sash, one 9/9 horizontally sliding sash, and one 8/8 sliding sash. The east return has a brick ground floor that extends into the rear wing, which features plank boarding at the gable head for advertising signs. The rear wing has a plank door on the ground floor and a 6/6 horizontally sliding sash on the first floor.

There are early 20th-century brick extensions at the rear, fitted with 20th-century plate-glass windows and loading doors on each floor. Inside, the ground floor of both units opens into large storage or retail spaces, with cruciform bridging beams that have tongue stops. There is a framed passage between the two units. The first floors have similar open spaces with bridging beams. A 20th-century ladder staircase is present, and the original chimneypieces and other fittings have been removed. The roof of the front range has principals and one tier of butt purlins, while the roof of the rear wing features coupled principals.
