Description
Bay Tree Cottage is a cottage dating from around the mid 17th century, with alterations and an extension from the 18th or early 19th century. It is constructed from plastered stone rubble and/or cob, and features a thatched roof that is gabled at the right end and half hipped at the left end. The building has a one-room plan oriented at right angles to the road, with a fireplace located in the stack at the lower right end. The central doorway likely originally provided direct access to the room. In the 18th or early 19th century, a single-storey outshut was added to the rear, and later in the 19th century, an outbuilding was constructed at the high left end.
The exterior is one storey with an attic and presents an asymmetrical west front with one window. There is a 20th-century two-light casement window on the right and a 20th-century porch to the left of centre, beside which is a small single-storey outshut. The right-hand south gable end features two late 19th-century sash windows with glazing bars and a 20th-century casement. At the rear, there is a small late 19th-century first-floor two-light casement with glazing bars and a single-storey outshut with a slate lean-to roof. The later 19th-century outshut on the north end serves as an outbuilding.
Inside, there are two chamfered cross-beams, one of which has a bar run-out stop. The fireplace has been blocked. The roof is a replacement from the 18th or early 19th century, with collars lapped and pegged to the face of the principals.
