Description

Criff Cottage is a small house dating to around the mid-17th century, situated near North Petherwin. The structure is built of rendered and painted stone rubble and cob, with a left-hand gable end of local stone rubble. The house features a circa mid-17th century plan, potentially originally comprising two rooms and a passage, with an entrance to the left of centre, a small unheated service room to the left, and a hall-kitchen to the right heated by an end stack. Alternatively, it may have been a single-room plan with a right-hand end stack. A circa 19th-century lean-to projection extends from the front left. In the late 20th century, a timber verandah extension was added across the front, incorporating a small outshut to the left. The asymmetrical front elevation includes a 20th-century 2-light casement window on each floor to the right. The rear and side elevations remain largely unaltered. The right-hand end has a large projecting stack and a cloam oven projection, while the left-hand gable end may have been rebuilt in the early 19th century using local stone rubble. The rear elevation, facing the road, is without windows. Inside, original features include complete 17th-century chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and a chamfered and stopped timber lintel over the fireplace.
