Description
A farmhouse, likely dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of rendered stone rubble and cob, with the rear wing partially rebuilt in brick. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with asbestos slate, with gable ends. There are brick stacks, one dating from the 19th century with moulded strings and projecting stone rubble, and another stone and brick stack to the rear wing. The original layout is uncertain, but the front range likely comprised two rooms and a passage, with a larger hall on the left and a smaller parlour on the right, both heated by end stacks. A contemporaneous or slightly later kitchen wing was situated to the rear right, also heated by an end stack; the end wall of this wing was rebuilt in the late 19th or 20th century. A 19th or 20th century service outshut extends from the rear left. The exterior presents a regular, almost symmetrical three-window front with 19th-century two and three-light casement windows. A 19th-century door, protected by a slate hood, is positioned to the right of the centre, flanked by a three-light and a two-light casement window. There are three two-light casements on the first floor. The right-hand side of the rear wing shows possible remains of a moulded timber lintel above a late 18th or 19th century three-light casement. At the time of survey in 1987, the farmhouse was disused and inaccessible for interior inspection. The left-hand room retains a partly blocked fireplace with visible granite jambs and a boarded ceiling. The right-hand room has a plastered ceiling and a 20th-century grate. An external clom oven projection is visible. Further internal investigation may reveal additional features and help to refine the farmhouse’s dating.
