Description

The Old Cottage is an 18th-century house located on Dawlish Street in Teignmouth. It features painted roughcast walls and a slate roof, with no chimneys. The original structure has a two-unit plan, which includes a 20th-century rear extension. The cottage is two storeys high and has an almost symmetrical two-window layout.

The entrance is a right-of-centre seven-panel door, with three lower panels and glazed upper panels, sheltered by a projecting porch supported by slender columns that have a slight curve and round caps, topped with a flat 20th-century roof. On both floors, the door is flanked by 20th-century sash windows with eight panes over eight panes.

Inside, the left-hand ground-floor room features a chamfered crossbeam that rests on the window lintel and shows a recess from a former door on the left side. The right-hand room has a similarly positioned boxed-in beam. At the center rear, there is an early 19th-century semi-elliptical arch with reeded moulding, which may have originally been a recess but now provides access to the 20th-century kitchen.
