Description
The war memorial located in the churchyard of St Michael the Archangel was constructed around 1921, with the designer unknown. It is made from rough-faced granite and features a rendered brick plinth.
The memorial is designed as a Latin cross, which is set upon a square platform. The cross stands on a base that consists of three stepped stages, also made of rough-faced granite. Each step of the base has an inset smooth panel that displays a series of inscriptions. These inscriptions read: "GREATER LOVE HATH / NO MAN THAN THIS THAN A / MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE / FOR HIS FRIENDS / 1914 ‘INVICTIS PAX’ 1919 / TO THE GLORY OF GOD, / IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE SAILORS, / SOLDIERS AND AIR MEN OF THIS / PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR." The entire structure is elevated on a high rendered brick plinth, which raises the memorial above the height of the adjacent boundary wall of the churchyard.
