Description

Den House, now a hotel, was built in the early 19th century and altered in the mid- and late-19th century. The house is constructed of painted stucco, with a late-19th-century mansard roof covered in decorative fish-scale slates, hipped at the top and to the left of the later left wing. There are two late-19th-century moulded stacks to each return and one to the left wing. The building has a double-depth plan with a two-storey wing to the left.

The exterior is two storeys with large late-19th-century attic windows; originally a symmetrical three-window range with a two-window range left wing. The early 19th-century coped parapet is complemented by late-19th-century horned 2/2-pane sash windows. Three gabled dormers have decorative bargeboards, finials, and pendants. Two wide, shallow, curved bays extend from the facade, which is spanned by a fine mid-19th-century first-floor cast-iron trellised balcony and canopy, supported by four pairs of incised square columns. The front door has a semicircular fanlight. A ramped entrance to the cellar bar projects to the left of the door. The left wing has a full-height canted bay with a hipped roof and decorative canopy to the ground-floor window. The interior was not inspected.

Den House is a prominent feature in the townscape, distinguished by its cast-ironwork.
