Description

The Laxton War Memorial is a First World War memorial located in the churchyard of the Grade I listed parish church of St Michael the Archangel, north of the chancel. The memorial is constructed from granite with lead lettering. It consists of a plain cross standing on a draped top section of a square column, which is in turn supported by a square base of two stages. A sculpted broken artillery piece, along with sprays of laurel and oak, is carved into the north face of the column's base. The column is inscribed on its north face with the words: "TO / THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN GRATEFUL / REMEMBRANCE OF / THOSE FROM THIS / PARISH WHO FELL IN / THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1919 / GREATER LOVE HATH / NO MAN THAN THIS, / THAT A MAN LAY / DOWN HIS LIFE FOR / HIS FRIENDS." The names of nine men who lost their lives are recorded on the two stages of the plinth.
