Description
The war memorial in St Michael's Churchyard was erected in 1919 by Messrs J W Mansell of Bournemouth. It is made from Cornish granite and features a simple Celtic or runic cross with a tapering shaft. This cross is set upon a tapered plinth, which stands on a rectangular base with raised sides.
On the west face, the memorial has an inscription that reads: 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THE SAILORS AND SOLDIERS OF THIS PARISH / WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919, / AND WHOSE NAMES ARE INSCRIBED HEREON, THIS CROSS / IS ERECTED BY THEIR FELLOW-PARISHIONERS AND FRIENDS'. This side also lists the names of thirty-four men who lost their lives.
Additionally, the north and south faces of the memorial bear the names of forty-six men who died during the Second World War.
