Description

The churchyard walls, gate piers, and gates surrounding the Church of St Michael in Teignmouth were built around 1821 by Andrew Patey of Exeter. They are made of grey Plymouth stone and feature chamfered capping along with cast and wrought-iron gates. The walls on the north, north-east, east, and west sides are approximately 1 meter high and extend for 20 meters, with similar walls on the west front that slope down in stages to the south-west corner. The gate piers rise to 3-4 meters and have stepped pyramidal caps. The double gates are about 2 meters high, designed with long and short railings topped with cast-iron fleurs-de-lys, and feature quadrant bracing in the upper halves that create an inverted semi-circle when closed. There are similar gates on the west side. Additionally, later 19th-century high red sandstone walls enclose the north and south-east sides. The south-east wall is approximately 3 meters high and extends for about 48 meters, rendered on the outside facing Den Promenade, and includes segmental-arched niches for seats and two harnessing rings. The north wall is about 2 meters high and extends for approximately 24 meters, connecting to the Plymouth stone walls at both ends. These structures are an important part of the setting for the Church of St Michael.
