Description

Merehaven is a house located on a corner site in Teignmouth, dating from the early 19th century, with possible earlier origins and alterations made in the late 19th century. The exterior features painted render over limestone rubble and a slate roof that is hipped to the northeast and northwest. There are rendered stacks on the east and west slopes, along the north ridge, and an external stack at the east end of the north entrance facade facing Mere Lane. The building has an L-plan layout and is two storeys tall with an attic, comprising a two-window range.

On the north facade, to the right, there is a tall external stack positioned above the ground floor. Steps lead down to an early 19th-century six-panel door, which is framed by a reeded architrave with roundels at the upper corner blocks. A slate pitched-roof porch with trellised sides extends approximately 5 meters towards the street. To the left of the door are 6/6-pane sash windows on both floors. Inside, to the left, there is a lower two-storey one-bay forward wing with a hipped slate roof and a ground-floor window that pivots horizontally with nine panes.

The right return of the building features a hipped dormer and 20th-century windows, while the left return is blank. The rear includes a late 19th-century two-storey canted bay and some 20th-century windows. Inside, the ground-floor room at the east end has a semi-elliptical arched recess, fixed shutters in the hall, several six-panel doors, and early 20th-century fireplaces. The projecting wing at the front has two rows of segmental stone arches, one of which formerly had a locking door, likely used as a wine store.
