Description

Numbers 23 and 24 are a pair of adjoining houses located on the east side of Fore Street in Chudleigh, dating from the early 19th century. They are likely constructed from stone, with a colourwashed and plastered exterior, and feature an asbestos slate roof that is gabled at the right end. The houses have a double depth plan with entrances positioned centrally on the front.

The buildings are two stories tall with a symmetrical three-bay front. The central entrances are framed by moulded round-headed architraves and have steps leading up to recessed front doors. The left-hand door, belonging to number 24, has four flush panels. There are shallow canted bays on either side, each with architraves, containing 12-pane centre sashes and 4-pane outer sashes. Above the front door is a blind recess, while the first-floor windows to the left and right are also 12-pane sashes. The houses have two 20th-century attic dormers and are complemented by iron railings at the front.

The interior has not been inspected. These houses are well preserved and contribute to the architectural character of Fore Street, which was largely rebuilt after the fire in 1807.
