Description
The Old Coaching House is a public house completed in 1808 in Chudleigh, Devon. It was built for Richard Rose, the landlord, using compensation money received after the devastating fire of 1807. The building is constructed of plastered stone, with a slate roof, gabled at the ends, and end and axial stacks. The original internal layout has been lost due to later alterations, notably in the late 20th century, including changes to the interior and additions to the rear. The building is rectangular, with the main entrance located to the left of centre. The front is asymmetrical, with four bays and regular fenestration. A Doric porch with a panelled soffit and steps leads to a wide, segmental arched doorway. The left and right-hand bays feature two-storey bows containing tripartite sash windows, some of which have blocked panes. Other windows are 12-pane sashes with margin glazing, though one window has 20th-century glazing. The interior has been extensively modernised, and the contemporary staircase and woodwork mentioned in a 1952 description are no longer present. Details concerning the rebuilding after the 1808 fire are recorded in A. Crockett’s book about the Chudleigh fire.
