Description

Number 60, including the iron railings and gates in front, is a house located on Fore Street in Chudleigh. It was built around 1810, with later 19th and early 20th-century bay windows added. The house is constructed of colourwashed plastered stone and features slate roofs, including a hipped roof at the front and a two-span roof at the rear, with end stacks topped by paired chimney pots.

The layout consists of a double depth, four-room plan with two heated rooms on either side of a central passage, which has a dogleg stair at the rear. A service stair leads from the rear left room to service rooms in the basement, one of which is heated and may have served as the kitchen. The basement is at a lower ground level at the rear and contains a cobbled floor and an old door, likely remnants from an earlier house that existed on the site before the fire in Chudleigh in 1807.

The house is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front and an eaves cornice. It features a central Tuscan porch with a six-panel front door that has panelled reveals and soffit. The ground floor windows are four-pane sashes, enhanced by Tudor-style hoodmoulds with label stops added around the 1840s. On the first floor, there are canted bays on the left and right, likely a later 19th-century addition, each with a central four-pane sash and two outer lights. The central first-floor window has twelve panes. The rear elevation includes a tall sash stair window with a segmental head and distinctive glazing bars.

The house is slightly set back from Fore Street, with iron railings marking the boundary in front and a pair of iron vehicular gates leading to an access road at the right end of the property. The gates feature spike finials and semi-circular braces. Inside, contemporary features remain, including joinery, plaster cornices, an Ashburton marble fireplace, and a stick baluster stair with a ramped, wreathed handrail. This house is a notable example of early 19th-century architecture, showcasing a well-preserved interior that reflects the rebuilding efforts in Chudleigh after the 1807 fire.
