Description
Number 11, including the iron railings to the front, is a house located on Fore Street in Chudleigh. Established in 1877 as a Working Men's Reading Room and Library, it is built from stone rubble with a colourwashed and plastered front elevation. The house features a slate roof that is gabled at both ends, with stacks on the north and south sides. It showcases an eclectic late 19th-century style with strong Venetian details.
The building has two storeys and an attic, with a rectangular plan and a gable end facing the road that includes a central entrance. The symmetrical three-bay gabled front is adorned with a deep bracketed cornice that extends over corner pilasters, creating an open pediment. The pilasters feature fielded panels. There is a central Tuscan porch that has a half-glazed front door with panelled reveals and soffit. On either side of the front door are slightly recessed canted bay windows, with architraves that rise as a segmental arch above the centre light, featuring scallop shell and foliage carvings. The sash windows in these bays have glazing bars, although the right-hand bay has been altered to include a 20th-century door.
Above the porch, there is a first-floor sash window with a shouldered architrave and cornice supported by short pilasters with scallop carvings. To the left and right are round-headed sashes with shouldered architraves, keystones, and brackets. A single second-floor Venetian window with glazing bars is located in the gable. Iron railings enclose a narrow area in front of the building. The interior has not been inspected, but it is possible that contemporary features remain. The prominent elevation facing Fore Street significantly enhances the townscape.
