Description

No. 7 Fore Street is a shop located in Chudleigh, believed to have been established as a baker's shop in 1830, likely built after the fire of 1807. The building is probably constructed of stone and roughcast, topped with a slate roof that has rounded eaves at the left end and features end stacks. It stands two storeys tall with an asymmetrical three-window front on a corner site, showcasing a canted corner at the left end. The plan is deep and rectangular, with the left front corner splayed.

On the ground floor, there is a double-fronted shop, with the left window positioned on the corner. A carriageway runs through the right end of the building. The shop door is deeply recessed and has a rectangular fanlight above it, flanked by curved bay shop windows—curved towards the door and flat on the other side. The left two lights consist of 16-pane windows, while the right lights include a combination of 16-pane and 8-pane windows.

On the first floor, there are three windows: a 12-pane sash on the left corner, and the centre and right windows are variations of a 16-pane sash, each featuring three larger panes at the top, with the central pane being pivot-hung. At the time of the survey in 1986, the interior was in the process of being gutted. This building is noted for its exceptionally attractive early 19th-century small shop front, prominently situated in the centre of Chudleigh.
